Coffee spilled? Laptop fallen in the pool? We reveal how to prevent damage - if you act quickly.
Electricity and liquids do not get along well. When the two meet, liquid can cause great damage to electrical wiring. If you are not careful, you will even get an electric shock.
Important: If your laptop has suffered water damage right now, then leave it off until you have taken all the precautions listed here! And read this article on another computer, tablet or smartphone.
Let's start: avoid water damage
Immediately after the liquid has entered, make sure that your hands and the power button on your laptop are dry again. If necessary, use a towel.
If your laptop is still running and turned on in spite of the accident, turn it off now - and we do not mean the standard process of shutting down Windows. Press and hold the power button for about five seconds instead - your laptop will then turn off.
Next, remove any kind of power supply. Disconnect the power plug from the wall outlet if it was plugged in, then remove the battery if it is removable. At least you've already made sure that you do not get electrocuted yourself.
Now remove all the components that are still attached to your laptop: mouse, cable, USB storage media and so on. Open and remove any flaps and parts that can be easily opened and removed. This can be for example RAM, hard disk or SSD. In this guide we show in detail how to disassemble a notebook. For more tips on opening and disassembling a laptop, see this article.
If the liquid is sticky (such as lemonade or alcohol), it is better to leave the innards of your laptop to a professional cleaning. If, on the other hand, you have just spilled water, you can also drain your laptop yourself.
First, thoroughly dry the outer surface with a towel. Then place a larger, dry towel on a flat, level surface, open the laptop as far as it will go, and place it on the towel with the screen and keyboard facing down. Leave the laptop in this position for at least a few hours so that accumulated water can leak.
After this time, put your laptop back together and let yourself be surprised if it still works. If not, off to a professional.
